Budapest's Hungarian State Opera is both a working performance venue and a monument to the city's nineteenth-century cultural ambitions.
A palace for a growing capital
The Neo-Renaissance opera house was designed by Miklós Ybl and opened on 27 September 1884. Its position on Andrássy Avenue helped establish the new boulevard as a showcase of modern Budapest. The building brought opera and ballet into a purpose-built theatre after years of sharing stages with drama.
Art inside the auditorium
Painters, sculptors and craftspeople contributed to its celebrated interiors. Károly Lotz's painted ceiling and the ceremonial staircase are as much part of the experience as the stage. A major restoration culminated in the venue's reopening in 2022.

DOCUMENTED HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
An opening night the crowd could not resist
The Opera House's own account recalls spectators pushing past guards on the opening day in 1884, eager to see the new building. The excitement became part of the institution's history.
This is an anecdote documented by the opera company, not a local ghost legend.
