The Hungarian National Gallery preserves the long story of Hungarian visual art within the imposing buildings of Buda Castle.
A national collection in the former palace
The Gallery took up its present accommodation in Buda Castle in 1975. The palace setting gives medieval religious works, nineteenth-century painting and newer art a striking historical framework.
Art and institutional change
The National Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts came under a unified institutional structure in 2012. Their collections tell complementary stories, with the Castle museum retaining its strong emphasis on Hungarian art.
